# Possession

## Short Definition

Firm control of the ball by a player—the fundamental condition required for a catch, a fumble, a touchdown, or any scoring or turnover ruling.

## Definition

Possession means a player has the ball under firm, intentional control. It is the threshold condition for nearly every major ruling in football. To catch a pass, a receiver must establish possession. To score a touchdown, a ball carrier must have possession while breaking the goal line plane. To commit a fumble, a ball carrier must first have possession and then lose it.

Establishing possession on a catch requires: the receiver secures the ball (no bobbling), controls it through the completion of the catch, and survives any contact while maintaining that control. A player who catches the ball and immediately has it jarred loose before making a football move has not established possession—it is an incomplete pass.

In flag football possession is especially important at the snap. If a player has zero or one flag at the moment they receive the ball, they are ruled down immediately on possession—the flag condition at the instant of possession determines whether the play can continue.

## Example

"The receiver gets both hands on the ball—but it pops out immediately as the corner makes contact. No possession established. Incomplete pass, not a fumble."

## Common Confusion

Touching the ball is not the same as possession. A receiver who tips a ball without controlling it has not established possession—a defender who catches that tipped ball records an interception, not the receiver. Control and security of the ball is the threshold, not merely contact with it.
