# Position Flexibility

## Definition

Position flexibility describes a player's ability to line up and contribute effectively at multiple positions or alignments, expanding the range of ways a coaching staff can deploy him. In modern NFL offenses and defenses that prize versatility, a player who covers multiple spots without significant drop in effectiveness provides compounding value—one roster spot filling several needs.

On offense, flexibility most often applies to tight ends who can align in-line, in the slot, or as a fullback, and to running backs who can split out wide. On defense, it applies to safeties who can play box or deep, linebackers who can rush or drop, and linemen who can play multiple techniques.

In draft evaluation, position flexibility is specifically valued for lower-round picks where roster spots are scarce. A Day 3 player who competes at two or three positions is significantly more likely to make a 53-man roster than an equally talented player limited to one role. Coaches also prize it for creating pre-snap confusion without substituting personnel.

## Example

"He can play strong safety, nickel corner, or box linebacker depending on the call. That position flexibility is exactly what modern defenses want—one player who solves three problems."

## Common Confusion

Position flexibility is not tweener status. A tweener does not fit neatly into one position. A player with position flexibility fits well at multiple positions—he is not caught between roles but valued at several. Flexibility is an asset; tweener is a risk. Teams evaluate and deploy these players very differently.
