A coverage technique where a defender reads the quarterback's eyes and abandons or compresses their zone to undercut a route intended for another receiver.

## Definition

Poach is a coverage technique where a defender—typically a hook/curl dropper or safety—reads the quarterback's eye movement and compresses toward the route the quarterback is targeting, looking to undercut the throw intended for a different receiver than the one he's nominally covering.

The technique requires a defender who can process quarterback mechanics quickly: where are the eyes tracking, when is the shoulder starting to open, what is the receiver stem suggesting about the route? A defender who can answer those questions early enough has time to leave his zone and arrive at the catch point before the ball.

Poach is most dangerous against quarterbacks with telegraphed releases or predictable progression habits. Against disciplined passers who hold defenders with their eyes before throwing, a poaching defender who leaves his zone too early creates the window he was trying to close.

## Example

"Safety is in the hook zone reading the quarterback. The QB's eyes lock onto the crossing route at 12 yards—the safety breaks before the throw. He's at the catch point when the ball arrives. That's a poach, not good coverage by the quarterback."

## Common Confusion

Poach is confused with a straight robber technique. A robber drops to a predetermined zone to steal routes. A poaching defender reads the quarterback's eyes in real time and abandons his zone to undercut a specific throw. The robber has a zone; the poacher has a read. One is positional, the other is anticipatory.
