## Definition

Play speed is how fast a player appears to operate in actual game situations—a function of both athletic speed and football processing. A player with high play speed reaches the right spot quickly not only because he runs fast but because he reads the play correctly and takes efficient angles. His decisions are fast; his feet follow.

The distinction from 40-yard dash time matters because football is not a straight line. A linebacker who recognizes a run play at the snap and takes a direct angle arrives at the ball carrier faster than a faster linebacker who takes a wrong step first. The processing makes him fast even if his testing doesn't reflect it.

Play speed is one of the most contested and least measurable scouting traits because it requires watching film through a specific lens—tracking how quickly a player gets to the right place and whether the speed comes from testing or from football intelligence. Some scouts weight it heavily; others prefer verifiable athletic testing. Both inputs inform the complete evaluation.

## Example

"He ran a 4.62. Looks nothing like it on film. He's always in the right place because he reads plays before they develop—his feet are going the right direction before the ball is snapped. That's play speed. The 40 doesn't capture it."

## Common Confusion

Play speed and 40-yard dash time are not the same. A 40 time measures straight-line acceleration over a fixed distance with no football context. Play speed is how fast a player moves and processes in live game action—some players with modest 40 times play faster than their testing; some elite testers play slower than the number suggests.
