# Play-Side

## Short Definition

The side of the formation the play is designed to attack—the direction blockers are moving, the gap being created, and where the ball carrier is aimed.

## Definition

Play-side is the side of the formation that a run or pass play is designed to attack—the direction the blocking is organized toward, where the gap is being created, and where the ball carrier or pass concept is aimed. Every offensive play has a play-side, and understanding which side is play-side immediately tells you where to watch the blocks develop, which linemen are creating movement, and where the ball is going.

In run game terminology, play-side blockers are assigned to attack, climb, or seal their defenders toward a specific gap. The play-side tackle and guard typically double-team or combination-block toward the second level, creating the lane the running back reads. The play-side tight end seals the edge or kick-out blocks the contain defender. Play-side blocking is aggressive and movement-oriented—these blockers are generating the space the play is designed to exploit.

In pass game terminology, play-side refers to where the primary route concept is run. A play-side concept might have three receivers running a triangle combination—a corner route, a curl, and a flat—all on the same side as the play's primary reads. The quarterback works play-side first before checking to backside if the primary concept is covered.

The distinction between play-side and backside is structural to every run concept. Inside zone and outside zone both have defined play-side and backside blocking assignments—play-side linemen drive toward the run direction while backside linemen cut off pursuit. Gap schemes like Power and Counter have even more defined play-side actions—the pulling guard crosses from backside to play-side, explicitly converting a backside blocker into the lead blocker at the point of attack. Knowing which side is play-side at a glance is one of the first steps in reading a running play before the snap.

## Example

"The guard pulls left—that's play-side. The center and right guard combo the nose tackle to the backside linebacker. The running back follows the pull. Before the snap you already knew the play was going left: the play-side is wherever the pull is going."

## Common Confusion

Play-side and strength are not the same thing. Strength describes the side of the formation with more surface—more attached receivers or tight ends. Play-side describes where a specific play is directed. A team can run play-side to the weak side of the formation, attacking away from the tight end with a gap scheme designed to exploit the lighter defensive surface. The two concepts are related but independent—the offense chooses where to attack based on the run design, not automatically toward the tight end.
