# Play-Action

## Short Definition

A fake handoff followed by a pass, designed to hold run defenders in place and create open throwing windows.

## Definition

Play-action works because defenses that respect the run have to honor the fake. The quarterback takes the snap and sells a handoff—turns his shoulders, extends the ball, follows through with his eyes to the running back. Every defender who bites on the fake is out of position for the pass that follows.

The value of play-action is proportional to the threat of the run. A team that runs the ball effectively creates run defenders who commit early and move toward the line of scrimmage on run keys. Play-action uses that aggression against them—the linebackers step up, the safeties creep down, and the deep routes open behind them.

The most important element is the quarterback's sell. A convincing fake holds defenders an extra half-second—long enough for a receiver to put a linebacker in conflict or for a safety to take two steps toward the line. Even a small sell has value; it's the difference between a tightly covered throw and a clean window.

Play-action pairs naturally with bootlegs and nakeds—the fake runs in one direction, the quarterback rolls the other way, and the defense is flowing away from the throw.

## Example

"The linebacker took one step toward the run fake—just one step. That was enough. The tight end crossed behind him and caught it for a first down with nobody within ten yards."

## Common Confusion

Play-action gets confused with RPO. In play-action, the quarterback has already decided he's throwing before the snap—the run fake is pure deception. In an RPO, the quarterback reads a defender post-snap and makes a genuine give-or-throw decision based on what he sees.
