# Pick Value

## Short Definition

The relative worth of a specific draft pick based on round and position—earlier picks access better talent and carry more value in trade negotiations.

## Definition

Pick value is the relative worth of a specific draft pick based on its round and position within that round. Earlier picks are worth more because they provide access to better talent—the first overall pick offers the widest range of options among the entire draft class; the 200th pick accesses what remains after 199 teams have made their selections.

Pick value is formalized through trade value charts, which assign numerical scores to every selection. These charts create a common reference for trade negotiations: when teams exchange picks, both sides can calculate whether the transaction is at market value, above it, or below it. Teams that consistently receive above-chart value in trades are building capital; those who consistently pay above chart are spending it.

Pick value also varies by draft class. A first-round pick in a historically deep class is worth more than a first in a weak class—the talent accessible at that position is better. This is why teams sometimes prefer to receive future picks rather than current ones when trading down: they're betting the future class produces better value at that pick position.

## Example

"They gave up the 14th pick and a third to get the 4th pick. The chart says they overpaid. They accepted negative pick value on the transaction because the player they wanted was worth it to them. Pick value is what you're paying; the player is what you're buying."

## Common Confusion

Pick value and draft capital are related but not the same. Draft capital is the aggregate—a team's total collection of picks. Pick value describes the worth of a specific selection in isolation. A team's draft capital is the sum of all its individual pick values. The concepts work at different scales.
