## Definition

Personal foul is the category of fouls involving illegal physical conduct—dangerous hits, prohibited contact methods, or unsportsmanlike acts. Personal fouls carry a 15-yard penalty and an automatic first down when committed by the defense. Repeated personal fouls or egregious violations can result in ejection.

Common personal fouls include: unnecessary roughness after the whistle, roughing the passer, roughing the kicker, horse-collar tackle, facemask, targeting, and illegal contact on a defenseless player. Each has its own specific definition but they share the penalty structure.

Personal fouls are among the most consequential penalties in football because they cannot be declined into irrelevance the way a holding call sometimes can—15 yards plus an automatic first down fundamentally changes a series. Teams with discipline problems in this category consistently lose field position and extend drives for the opponent.

## Example

"The linebacker hits the receiver well after the ball is gone—late hit out of bounds, unnecessary roughness. Personal foul. Fifteen yards, automatic first down. The defense got the stop but gave the first down right back."

## Common Confusion

Personal foul is a catch-all for any rough play. It's a specific category of fouls involving dangerous, unnecessary, or unsportsmanlike physical conduct—things like horse-collar tackles, facemask grabs, unnecessary roughness after the whistle, and targeting. Not all hard hits are personal fouls. The distinction is whether the contact was legal within the rules or crossed into conduct the rules prohibit.
