# Perimeter

## Short Definition

The outer edge of the formation and defense, where leverage, force, and space are critical.

## Definition

The perimeter is the outer edge of the offensive formation and the defensive structure—the area outside the tackle box where outside runs, perimeter screens, and edge routes operate. It's where the force player sets the boundary for the run game and where cornerbacks and outside linebackers work against the passing game.

Offensive perimeter attacks try to outflank the defense—getting the ball outside before the defense can pursue. Jet sweeps, toss plays, and bubble screens all aim to reach the perimeter with a blocker advantage before a defender can close. Defenses respond by setting a force player specifically responsible for keeping runs from turning the corner.

In the passing game, the perimeter is where outside receivers work against cornerbacks, typically without help underneath. The space outside the numbers is perimeter territory—more separation is possible, but the field also runs out quickly near the sideline.

## Example

"Jet sweep to the boundary—the offense has a blocker at the perimeter before the defense can set the edge. The corner has to make an open-field tackle or the runner turns upfield with space. Perimeter speed is the entire play."

## Common Confusion

Perimeter is used loosely to mean the edge of the field. In football structure the perimeter is the contested area outside the tackle box where the force player sets the edge—it's defined by personnel and assignment, not just geography. The perimeter shifts based on where the tight end lines up and which side the force is set to.
