## Short Definition

A blitz that converts to coverage when the back releases into a route—taking away the hot throw while still threatening pressure if the back stays in to block.

## Definition

Peel is a conditional pass rush technique where the blitzer fires off the snap as if rushing the quarterback but converts to coverage the moment the running back releases into a route. If the back stays in to block, the rusher rushes. If the back releases, the rusher peels off the rush and picks up the back in man coverage.

The technique solves the protection-outlet problem. When a defense sends a blitz, the quarterback's fastest answer is a hot throw to the back in the flat. The peel blitzer takes away that outlet while still threatening pressure when the back stays in—the offense can't have it both ways.

Peel requires the blitzer to read the back's assignment at the snap and convert immediately. A peel that happens a step too late arrives in coverage after the ball has already been thrown to the back. Timing is the entire technique.

## Example

"Linebacker fires on the blitz—back stays in to block. Rush. Second play, linebacker fires again—back releases to the flat. Linebacker peels immediately, picks up the back, the quarterback has nowhere to throw the hot route. Peel took the answer away."

## Common Confusion

Peel is confused with a delayed blitz. A delayed blitz fires later in the play but still commits to rushing the quarterback. A peel blitzer starts in a rush and converts to coverage if the key player—the running back—releases into a route. The peel is conditional on what the back does, not a timing variation on the same rush.
