# Pass Rusher

## Short Definition

Any defensive player assigned to pressure or sack the quarterback—a role filled by linemen, linebackers, or defensive backs depending on the scheme.

## Definition

Pass rusher is a functional label for any defender assigned to attack the quarterback on passing downs, regardless of positional designation. Defensive ends, interior linemen, outside linebackers, and occasionally defensive backs all serve as pass rushers depending on scheme and personnel grouping.

At the elite level, pass rushing is among the most coveted skills in football. A defender who consistently wins one-on-one matchups against offensive linemen—creating pressure without help—changes the entire game: the quarterback's release time, coverage windows, and which plays the offensive coordinator will call.

Pass rushers are evaluated on get-off (quickness off the snap), first move, hand fighting, bend around the edge, counter moves, and motor.

Pure pass rushers who lack run defense are labeled situational players. Those who contribute across all three downs command higher positional value and draft grades.

## Example

"He's their best pass rusher but hiding on early downs—keeping him fresh for third down. When he's on the field in passing situations, the offensive line has to account for him every snap."

## Common Confusion

Pass rusher is a functional role, not a position. A linebacker rushing the passer on third down is a pass rusher in that moment. The label describes the assignment—attack the quarterback—not the depth chart designation or alignment.
