# Pass Protection

## Short Definition

The offensive line's coordinated effort to keep pass rushers from the quarterback—the time it creates determines what the entire passing game can attempt.

## Definition

Pass protection is the collective effort of the offensive line—and sometimes backs and tight ends—to prevent pass rushers from reaching the quarterback. It begins with the snap: linemen kick back into their sets, establish depth, and create a protected area for the quarterback to work inside.

Protection schemes come in two main types: man and zone. Man protection assigns each blocker a specific defender regardless of where that defender moves. Zone protection assigns blockers to areas and they pick up whichever rusher enters their zone—sliding in one direction so defenders who loop or stunt to the opposite side get picked up by the next lineman in the chain.

The MIKE call anchors every protection. Once the center identifies the primary linebacker, every blocker knows their assignment relative to that anchor. Defenders inside the Mike get blocked one way; defenders outside the Mike get blocked another. A pre-snap shift that moves the Mike forces a Re-Mike call before the pocket is compromised.

Pass protection is evaluated by time. A protection that holds for 2.5 seconds allows the quarterback's first and second reads to develop. One that holds for 3.5 seconds opens the entire route tree. One that collapses in 1.8 seconds eliminates every read. Protection time is the single most significant variable in the passing game.

## Example

"Five rushers, five blockers—the line picks up every rusher. Three seconds. The quarterback works through his first and second reads, finds the dig route at 14 yards. Good protection gave him the time to find it. Without that time, the throw doesn't exist."

## Common Confusion

Pass protection and blocking in general are not the same. Run blocking attacks defenders by driving into them. Pass protection is reactive—blockers set their feet and mirror the rusher to prevent him from reaching the quarterback. The techniques and objectives are fundamentally different even though both involve blockers engaging defenders.
