A multi-leg bet where all selections must win—each leg compounds the payout but one loss kills the entire ticket, regardless of how many other legs hit.

## Definition

A parlay combines two or more individual bets into a single wager where all selections must win for the parlay to pay. Each winning leg rolls the proceeds into the next, compounding the potential payout. A two-team parlay at standard –110 odds on each leg pays roughly +260; a four-team parlay pays roughly +1100. The increased payout reflects the decreased probability of all legs hitting.

Parlays are the most popular bet type by volume at major sportsbooks because the payouts are large and the upside is immediately understandable. A $20 four-team parlay that hits pays over $200. The entertainment value of sweating multiple games simultaneously—each with stakes attached—makes parlays engaging well beyond their expected value.

Same-game parlays (SGPs) have become one of the most widely marketed products in modern sports betting. They combine correlated player props and game outcomes from a single game—for example, a quarterback to throw for 300+ yards, his receiver to score a touchdown, and the total to go over—into a single bet. Books price SGPs with reduced payouts compared to independent leg parlays to offset the positive correlation between legs.

The house edge on parlays is substantially higher than on single-game bets. At true odds, a two-team parlay at 50/50 should pay +300; most books pay +260, capturing significant extra margin. The gap widens with each added leg. Professional bettors rarely use parlays for this reason; the parlay market exists primarily as an entertainment product with lottery-like appeal.

## Example

"Three-team parlay, all favorites—Chiefs, Eagles, Bills. All three cover and a $50 bet pays $325. But if the Bills lose by a field goal, the whole ticket is dead. Every leg has to hit."

## Common Confusion

A parlay pays more than individual bets combined—but requires every leg to win. Missing one leg loses the entire bet, not just that portion. A 4-team parlay where three legs win and one loses returns nothing. The higher payout compensates for the compounding probability of all legs hitting, and the book's edge compounds as well—parlays carry more juice than single-game bets.
