# Over/Under

## Short Definition

A bet on whether the combined final score of both teams will exceed or fall short of a set total—completely independent of which team wins the game.

## Definition

The over/under—also called the total—is a bet on whether the combined final score of both teams will be higher or lower than a number set by the sportsbook. If the total is 46.5, betting the over wins if the final score adds up to 47 or more; betting the under wins if it adds up to 46 or fewer. The winner of the game is irrelevant.

Totals are set using offensive and defensive efficiency data, pace of play, weather, injuries to key offensive players, and historical scoring trends between specific matchups. A cold-weather outdoor game in January with two strong defenses might be set at 38; a dome game with two top-five offenses might be set at 54.5.

Weather is among the most significant variables in total movements. Wind above 15–20 mph measurably reduces passing efficiency and field goal accuracy, which is why totals on outdoor games drop when forecasts shift. Precipitation affects ball security. Temperature affects kicking. Bettors who track weather windows and book totals before weather adjustments move the line have a recognized informational edge.

Over/under language is now standard in football broadcasts. "This has the feel of a low-scoring defensive game" and "I expect both offenses to light it up today" are total-adjacent takes even when no bet is mentioned. Understanding what a game total represents—and why it moves—adds a layer of context to how analysts frame matchups before kickoff.

## Example

"Total's 44 and it's 17–14 at halftime—31 points scored, 13 more needed in the second half to hit the over. Both defenses are playing well. This looks like an under."

## Common Confusion

The over/under total is the combined score of both teams—not one team's score. A total of 47.5 is hit by a 28–21 final (49 combined points, over) or missed by a 24–20 final (44 combined points, under). Betting the over does not mean you're backing the high-scoring team; you're backing both offenses together.
