# Over Front

A 4-3 defensive front where the 3-tech defensive tackle is set to the formation's strong side, creating a structural overload to that side.

## Definition

The Over front is a 4-3 alignment where the 3-tech defensive tackle lines up to the formation's strong side, shaded on the outside shoulder of the strong-side guard. The defensive line overloads the strong side—the 3-tech and the strong-side end both work to the same side—while the 1-tech or shade anchors the weak-side interior.

The Over front is the most common base alignment in Saban-tree defenses. It creates a structural advantage against formation-strength runs—the offense's best blocking surface runs into the most dangerous interior rusher. The weak-side linebacker (Will) is often left clean in the Over because the 1-tech occupies the weak-side guard.

The Over is paired with the Under front as complementary looks. Over shifts the 3-tech to strength; Under shifts it to the weak side. Defenses alternate between them to create pre-snap uncertainty about gap assignments and linebacker run-fit responsibilities.

## Example

"3-tech is to the strong side—that's the Over. Watch the Will linebacker: the 1-tech has the weak-side guard, so the Will is unblocked. If the run goes weak, the Will is a free hitter. That's what the Over creates."

## Common Confusion

Over front and strong-side rotation are confused because both involve the defense shifting toward the formation strength. The Over front is a specific pre-snap alignment—where the 3-tech lines up tells you it's an Over. A strong-side rotation describes post-snap movement. Over is a structural designation; rotation is a coverage call.
