# Outside Zone

## Short Definition

A run where all blockers zone-step laterally toward the sideline, with the runner reading blocks to cut inside or continue outside toward the edge.

## Definition

Outside zone stretches the defense horizontally. Every lineman steps laterally toward the playside—guards, tackles, tight end—all working to reach their assignments and seal them inside. The running back aims for the outside hip of the playside tackle and reads the blocks as they develop. If the edge seals, he turns it up outside. If the edge collapses or he can't reach the corner, he cuts back against the pursuit into the backside.

The cutback is the constraint that makes outside zone a complete play. The defense has to flow laterally to chase the stretch—and when it over-pursues, the backside lane opens. The best outside zone runners aren't trying to reach the edge every time. They're reading the pursuit and taking the gap the defense vacates.

## Example

"Outside zone to the right, defense flows hard to the sideline. Backside linebacker chases the sweep. Back plants, cuts backside—the backside tackle sealed his man, there's nobody there. That cutback off outside zone is as designed as the edge run. The back read it correctly."

## Common Confusion

Outside zone is not a sweep. A sweep designates a gap outside the formation and sends the runner there. Outside zone is a reach-blocking system where the cut is determined by what the defense does. The backside cutback is just as designed as the frontside edge—the runner is reading blocks, not sprinting to a predetermined spot.
