# Option Route

## Short Definition

A route where the receiver reads the coverage after the snap and breaks to the open area—inside or outside—based on where the defender takes him.

## Definition

The option route puts the decision-making in the receiver's hands. The receiver releases, reads the defender's alignment and leverage, and breaks to the open side. If the corner has inside leverage, the receiver breaks outside. If the corner has outside leverage, the receiver breaks inside. The defender's positioning determines the route.

Option routes are a West Coast offense staple—the concept is built on receiver intelligence and the belief that a smart receiver can always find open space if he reads the coverage correctly. The quarterback reads the same defender, knowing in advance which direction the receiver will break based on what the corner does.

The mechanic is precise. The receiver has to make his read before his break—at 8 to 12 yards—and commit cleanly. Indecision creates a slow break that gives the defender time to recover. A decisive read and a sharp cut generate separation even against tight man coverage.

Option routes require quarterbacks and receivers to share the same read on the coverage. If the quarterback thinks the receiver is going outside and the receiver breaks inside, the ball goes to the wrong spot. Timing and communication are built through repeated practice of the same situations.

"The receiver read the corner outside leverage and broke his route inside. The quarterback already knew—he was throwing inside before the receiver started his break."

## Common Confusion

Option routes are confused with route adjustments or audibles. An audible changes the whole play; a route adjustment is a response to a blitz. An option route is a built-in decision within the route itself—the receiver's break direction is undefined until he reads the coverage post-snap.
