# Operative Player

## Short Definition

In co-ed flag football, the required female player who must serve as ball carrier, pass target, or running QB at least once per designated interval.

## Definition

The operative player rule ensures meaningful female participation in co-ed flag football. A player qualifies when they are: the intended receiver of a forward pass; the primary ball runner who crosses the LOS; or a female QB who scrambles past the LOS.

Most co-ed leagues require the operative player to be female at least once within every 3 consecutive downs.

## Example

"That was a closed play—their female receiver ran the curl and caught the pass, satisfying the operative player requirement."

## Common Confusion

Some coaches design throwaway plays just to satisfy the requirement. This wastes a down and signals intent to the defense.
