A situation with ample space in front of the ball carrier or defense, often emphasizing angles and tackling.

## Definition

Open field football is about space, angles, and one-on-one execution. After a catch, a broken tackle, or a missed gap—there's room. No pile, no defenders packed in. The ball carrier and the last defenders are operating with yards of space between them, and who wins comes down to vision, evasion, and pursuit angles.

For the defense, open field tackling is its own skill set. A defender who takes a bad pursuit angle gives the ball carrier an unobstructed lane. A corner who lunges instead of wrapping up misses the tackle. For the ball carrier, it's about making the defender commit first—then going around. The field opens up faster than most people expect, and the decisions happen at full speed.

## Example

"Safety makes the attempt at the 30, ball carrier cuts back inside—the safety overran it. Now it's the corner in pursuit at a flat angle. He has to run him down or this is a touchdown. Open field football: angles and execution, nothing else."

## Common Confusion

Open field is treated as a ball carrier problem—make someone miss and score. The defense wins or loses open field situations just as much. Pursuit angles, gap responsibilities after a broken play, and tackling technique in space are what decide it. The miss often happens before the contact.
