# Onside Kick

## Short Definition

A short intentional kickoff the kicking team tries to recover after the ball travels 10 yards—a desperation play to regain possession late in a game.

## Definition

An onside kick is a short intentional kickoff designed to be recovered by the kicking team rather than returned by the receiving team. The ball must travel at least 10 yards before the kicking team can legally recover it. The receiving team has the right of first possession inside those 10 yards—the kicking team can only recover once the ball has traveled the required distance.

Onside kicks are attempted in desperation situations—typically when a team is trailing and needs possession late in a game with few timeouts. A team that has just scored converts an onside kick gives themselves an additional possession to close the gap or take the lead.

The surprise onside kick—attempted when the opponent is not expecting it—carries higher success odds because the receiving team has not deployed its hands team (the best ball-handlers brought in to secure the kick). A regular onside attempt against a hands team that has correctly anticipated the play has much lower odds.

The ball placement and spin on an onside kick are precise skills. The kicker aims to drive the ball into the ground at a specific angle to create an unpredictable bounce—the randomness of the bounce is part of the strategy.

## Example

"Down eight with two minutes left—they score, convert the two-point. Now down two. Onside kick. The ball drives into the turf at the 47-yard line, kicks sideways. The kicking team's coverage player smothers it. They get the ball back. The math said they had to try it."

## Common Confusion

The onside kick success rate in the NFL is under 20% when expected and slightly higher when surprise. Teams sometimes confuse an onside kick attempt with good odds—it's a low-probability play that's most rational in specific late-game scenarios where the alternative (kicking deep and needing a stop) is equally unlikely to produce a win.
