# On the Clock

## Short Definition

The team currently making the active draft selection—derived from the time limit each team has to submit their pick to the league.

## Definition

On the clock describes the team currently holding the active draft pick with the selection clock running. From the moment the previous pick is submitted until the current team submits their selection, that team is on the clock. The phrase comes from the actual time limit—teams have ten minutes per pick in the first round, seven in the second, and five in rounds three through seven.

The phrase has expanded into general draft conversation to describe any team with an imminent meaningful pick. A team selecting third overall is on the clock as soon as the second pick is made. In the days before the draft, the phrase is used to describe teams in prime position to shape the early board: "Team X is on the clock at two and the quarterback class is deep."

Running the clock—using most or all of the time limit before selecting—is a deliberate strategy. Teams sometimes run down the clock waiting for a trade offer to materialize, or simply to gather final information before committing to a player.

## Example

"Pick is in. Team B is on the clock. Ten-minute window. Fifteen seconds to go—they submit. The pick card goes to the podium. The crowd waits. The name gets called."

## Common Confusion

On the clock and next on the clock are different. On the clock means a team is currently making their selection—the pick clock is running. Next on the clock means a team is about to have the pick. Only one team is on the clock at a time.
