# Off-Field Concerns

## Short Definition

Background issues outside football—legal history, behavioral flags, or attitude concerns—weighed against a prospect's talent when teams set his draft grade.

## Definition

Off-field concerns is broadcast and scouting shorthand for any documented issues in a prospect's background outside of football performance—legal matters, behavioral history, substance use, attitude reports from coaches and teammates, or any other non-football factor teams must investigate before committing draft capital.

Teams conduct background work on every prospect, including interviews with coaches, teammates, professors, and law enforcement. Top-30 visits and pre-draft interviews are used in part to directly assess a player's maturity, accountability, and coachability.

In draft positioning, off-field concerns can cause a player to fall significantly from his talent grade—teams differ in their tolerance for risk. A player who slides on draft night is often explained on-air as having "off-field concerns," with the severity left unstated. For high-character organizations, any flag can be disqualifying. For teams in win-now mode at a position of need, talent frequently outweighs risk.

"He had the talent to go top ten. The off-field concerns pushed him out of the first round entirely—every team had to weigh what they knew against what they were willing to take on."

## Common Confusion

Off-field concerns covers a wide spectrum—from minor incidents with no legal component to serious criminal history. Broadcast usage rarely distinguishes between these. The term signals that a flag exists; understanding its severity requires separate research beyond what announcers provide on air.
