# Off-Ball Linebacker

## Definition

Off-ball linebacker is a positional grouping for linebackers who align off the line of scrimmage—the MIKE and WILL in a 4-3, or the two interior linebackers in a 3-4. The label distinguishes them from edge linebackers who rush the passer and from defensive linemen in the trenches.

Off-ball linebackers are defensive communicators: they identify formations, call blocking assignments, and align the rest of the defense before the snap. Run stopping and tackle production are their primary measurables, but in modern NFL defenses they are increasingly evaluated on pass coverage—matching running backs in space, carrying tight ends through the seam, and dropping into zone without becoming the target the offense attacks.

In draft evaluation, off-ball linebackers are valued below EDGE and coverage defenders because their impact, while real, is harder to isolate. A true three-down off-ball linebacker who stops the run, blitzes, and covers in man is rare and commands premium value.

"He's an off-ball linebacker—not a pass rusher. His value is in the run game and in coverage against backs and tight ends. Can't do both at the NFL level? He's a two-down player."

## Common Confusion

Off-ball linebacker and EDGE are both called "linebackers" on depth charts but describe entirely different jobs. An off-ball linebacker reads and stops the run and covers backs and tight ends. An EDGE aligns on the line and rushes the passer. Conflating them misrepresents both the role and the positional value.
