## Definition

The NFLPA (National Football League Players Association) is the labor union representing all NFL players in collective bargaining with the league. Founded in 1956, the NFLPA negotiates the CBA on behalf of players, setting the terms that govern salaries, working conditions, safety protocols, free agency, and all other employment terms across the league.

Beyond collective bargaining, the NFLPA certifies player agents—establishing minimum standards and ethical requirements for those who represent players in individual contract negotiations. The union also administers benefits programs, pension plans, and player assistance resources for current and former players.

The NFLPA has periodically decertified—legally dissolved as a union—as a labor tactic to gain leverage in CBA disputes. In 2011, the NFLPA decertified to allow individual players to file antitrust lawsuits against the NFL, a legal mechanism that changes the negotiating dynamic. The tactic is a last resort that signals the union is prepared to pursue court rulings rather than negotiated agreements.

The relationship between the NFLPA and the NFL shapes every financial story in professional football. When a player holds out, signs an extension, is franchise-tagged, or seeks guaranteed money, the rules governing those events were negotiated by the NFLPA. The union's leverage in those negotiations—and its decisions about when to strike, litigate, or compromise—determines the financial landscape all players operate within.
