## Definition

The NFL Scouting Combine is the annual pre-draft event held in Indianapolis each February and March where draft prospects complete a standardized battery of physical testing, medical evaluations, and interviews in front of all 32 NFL teams. It is the most centralized talent evaluation event in the draft process.

The physical testing includes the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump, 3-cone drill, short shuttle, and bench press. Measurements—height, weight, hand size, arm length, and wingspan—are officially verified. These numbers populate every team's database and become part of the permanent record attached to each prospect's evaluation.

Medical evaluations at the Combine are conducted by team physicians and can significantly affect a player's draft stock—pre-existing injuries, structural concerns, or red-flag findings can cause a prospect to fall regardless of his film. The interviews with coaches and front office personnel are equally consequential: how a player presents, communicates, and handles adversarial questioning shapes how teams assess character and football intelligence.

## Common Confusion

The Combine measures athleticism, not football ability. A 4.3 forty and a first-round grade are not the same thing. Some players test poorly at the Combine and become elite NFL players; others test elite and never develop. Scouts use Combine data to confirm or challenge what they see on film—not to replace the film evaluation.
