NFL Films is the NFL's in-house production company, founded by Ed Sabol in 1962 and later run by his son Steve Sabol until his death in 2012. Before NFL Films, football was documented; after NFL Films, it was mythologized.

The studio pioneered techniques now standard in sports television: the close-up on a player's face before a critical play, the slow-motion replays that made violence beautiful, the omniscient narrator voice (most associated with Harry Kalas) that gave highlight reels the gravity of epic poetry. These innovations influenced not just sports media but documentary filmmaking broadly.

NFL Films' archive—millions of feet of game footage dating back to the 1960s—is one of the most significant sports media libraries in existence.
