# NFL Draft

## Short Definition

The annual event where all 32 NFL teams select college players—held each April across seven rounds, the primary mechanism for adding new talent to every roster.

## Definition

The NFL Draft is the annual selection event where all 32 NFL teams take turns choosing eligible players from the college ranks and other eligible sources. It runs across seven rounds over three days each April. The order of selection in each round is determined primarily by the previous season's standings—teams with worse records pick earlier, giving struggling franchises first access to the best available talent.

The draft is the most cost-controlled method of roster building available to NFL teams. Drafted players sign rookie contracts with fixed salary scales determined by where they were selected—first-round picks earn more than sixth-round picks, but all rookie deals are significantly below the open market rate for established players. This cost control is why draft capital is treated as a long-term asset: adding talented players on inexpensive contracts creates salary cap flexibility.

The draft has evolved into a major media event. Round one receives prime-time television coverage with millions of viewers. Teams have draft rooms filled with scouts, coaches, and analysts who have spent months evaluating every eligible prospect. The picks made over three days in April shape the competitive trajectory of franchises for years.

## Example

"Thirty-two teams, 257 picks, three days. Every selection is a bet on a player's future and a reflection of how the front office sees its own roster needs. The draft is where franchises are built—or set back—for years at a time."

## Common Confusion

The NFL Draft and the NFL Combine are separate events. The Combine happens in February and March—it's the evaluation process. The Draft happens in late April—it's the selection event. Players attend the Combine to be evaluated; they are selected at the Draft. The two are related but distinct steps in the pre-draft calendar.
