## Definition

Needs-based drafting is a draft philosophy that prioritizes filling specific roster deficiencies over selecting the highest-graded available player. When a team's biggest need is cornerback, a needs-based approach drafts the best available cornerback at each pick rather than taking a higher-graded interior lineman or pass rusher who doesn't address the identified gap.

The philosophy has intuitive appeal: teams understand their own roster better than any external evaluator. If a team is one quality cornerback away from a championship-caliber defense, investing a pick at that position creates clear immediate value. Waiting for BPA might produce a better player who contributes less to the team's specific competitive situation.

The risk is the reach. Needs-based drafting frequently produces selections where the player's talent grade doesn't justify the pick position—the team paid a premium in draft position to get the position, not the talent. Over multiple draft cycles, consistently drafting need over talent tends to produce rosters with uneven quality and limited depth at the positions where the approach generated reaches.

## Example

"They had four cornerbacks on the roster who couldn't start in the NFL. They took a corner in round one even though two better players at other positions were available. Needs-based. They addressed the weakness; they may have left better value on the board."

## Common Confusion

Needs-based drafting and team need are different concepts. Team need describes what a roster is missing. Needs-based drafting is a philosophy—the decision to let that roster deficiency drive pick selections even when better talent is available at other positions. A team can identify its needs without committing to a needs-based drafting approach.
