## Definition

The naked is a play-action rollout concept where the quarterback moves away from the run fake with no blocker protecting the backside—no pulling lineman, no tight end leading, no fullback in front. The entire offense sells the run in one direction; the quarterback rolls the opposite way with nothing between him and any defender who recognizes the fake early. The concept is built on pure deception: if the run fake holds the defense, the quarterback has open space and time to deliver a pass. If it doesn't, there is nowhere to go.

The concept works because the deception must hold the defense. A linebacker who doesn't bite on the fake can run directly to where the quarterback is going without encountering a blocker. The offense is betting that the defense's run-fit discipline—the instinct to flow to ball action—will overcome their individual recognition of the quarterback's movement. Against defenses that don't commit hard to run flow, or against a linebacker with enough discipline to hold on the fake, the naked exposes the quarterback to unprotected pressure.

Typical naked routes include a tight end or receiver dragging across the formation, a back releasing to the flat in the direction of the roll, and possibly a vertical route on the far side to threaten the safety. The drag route is the primary—it arrives in front of the quarterback as he rolls and provides an easy completion when the run fake has done its work. The flat route is the check if the drag is covered. The vertical is the shot if the safety committed to the run.

The naked bootleg differs from a standard boot in the protection structure. A boot has a lead blocker on the backside—a pulling guard or a tight end leading around the edge—giving the quarterback a physical buffer while he rolls. The naked removes that buffer entirely, which is both the concept's vulnerability and its name's origin: the quarterback rolls without protection, exposed on the backside.

"Naked bootleg weak—everyone sold the run strong. Linebackers flew to the run fake. The quarterback rolls naked to the backside, tight end drags across underneath. No linebacker anywhere close. Easy completion, first down. The fake did all the work."

## Common Confusion

Boot and naked use the same run-fake action but differ in protection. A boot has a lead blocker—usually a pulling lineman or a tight end—protecting the quarterback on the rollout. A naked has none. The quarterback is truly alone on the backside.
