# Motor

## Short Definition

How hard and relentlessly a player competes on every snap—pursuit, effort through blocks, and full intensity whether or not the play is already decided.

## Definition

Motor describes the effort and competitive drive a player brings to every play—the relentlessness with which they pursue the ball, fight through blocks, and continue competing when the play appears lost. A player with a high motor does not take plays off, does not stop pursuing after the initial assignment is beaten, and plays with full intensity from first snap to last.

In draft evaluation, motor is assessed through tape study across a full season rather than highlights. Scouts look for effort on plays where the player has no chance to make the tackle, hustle on run plays away from their side, and blocking effort by skill players on screens and sweeps. Inconsistent motor—giving maximum effort only when the ball is near—is a red flag suggesting production may not match physical ceiling at the NFL level.

Motor is weighted most heavily for edge rushers and defensive linemen, where non-stop effort on every down is essential. The phrase "plays with a high motor" is one of the most consistent compliments in broadcast draft coverage.

## Example

"Watch him on the backside of run plays—still chasing from three gaps away with no chance of making the tackle. That's motor. You cannot coach that into someone."

## Common Confusion

Motor is not athleticism or speed. A player with elite motor may not be the fastest on the field—it describes effort level and competitive relentlessness, not physical tools. Some highly athletic players are criticized for inconsistent motor; some less gifted players earn roster spots entirely on the basis of it.
