# Motion

## Short Definition

A pre-snap movement by an offensive player designed to create a coverage conflict, identify the defensive scheme, or change the formation before the snap.

## Definition

Motion is information and action simultaneously. When a player goes in motion, the defense has to respond—and how it responds tells the quarterback the coverage. If a defender follows the motion player man-to-man, the quarterback knows it's man coverage. If the defense rotates a zone and nobody follows, it's zone.

That pre-snap information has real value. Knowing the coverage before the snap lets the quarterback plan his read, identify the hot receiver, and anticipate where the open window will be. Some teams motion specifically to get this information, not because they want the player in the new alignment.

Motion also creates conflicts. A receiver going in jet motion toward the quarterback can take a handoff on a jet sweep—the defense has to honor that threat. A tight end motioning from one side to the other forces a zone defense to rotate or leaves someone out of position.

The NCAA and NFL have specific rules about which players can go in motion, how many can move simultaneously, and whether they can be moving at the snap. Illegal motion is among the most common offensive penalties.

## Example

"Watch the receiver go in motion across the formation—the corner follows him the whole way. Man coverage. The quarterback saw it before the snap and already knows exactly where he's going."

## Common Confusion

Motion and shift are different. In a shift, multiple players move simultaneously and must reset before the snap. Motion is typically one player moving after the formation sets. Illegal motion occurs when a player is moving toward the line of scrimmage at the snap.
