# MOFO

## Short Definition

Middle of Field Open—a pre-snap safety alignment with two safeties split to each side of the field, indicating two-high coverage (Cover 2 or Cover 4).

## Definition

MOFO tells the offense the middle of the field is being protected by two deep safeties rather than one. The space between them—the deep middle—is the primary target in a two-high structure. Seam routes, posts, and crossing routes that can outrun the dropping linebackers all attack the space the two safeties have to split between them.

Two-high coverage creates different vulnerabilities than single-high. The boundary corner is often left alone in deep coverage—outside comeback routes and corner routes can attack his zone without safety help over the top. The flat area is often undermanned because the corners are dropping deep.

Some teams show MOFO pre-snap and rotate one safety to the middle post-snap, converting to a single-high look. The pre-snap MOFO is disguise—the actual coverage is Cover 3 or Cover 1 after the snap. This is why quarterbacks develop post-snap confirmation habits: the pre-snap read starts the process, but the actual coverage is determined by what happens after the ball moves.

## Example

"Both safeties are split pre-snap—MOFO. Two-high look. The quarterback knows the middle of the field is covered by two safeties, so he's thinking boundary routes and the space beneath the safeties."

## Common Confusion

MOFO is confused with Cover 2 specifically. MOFO describes a safety alignment pattern—it's compatible with Cover 2, Cover 4 (quarters), and various two-high match coverages. The pre-snap look is the same; the coverage rules behind it can differ significantly.
