# MOFC

## Short Definition

Middle of Field Closed—a pre-snap safety alignment with one safety in the middle of the field, indicating single-high coverage (Cover 1 or Cover 3).

## Definition

MOFC tells the offense where the safeties are before the snap. When the middle of the field is closed—one safety in the center of the field, no other safety balancing the deep zone—the coverage is almost certainly single-high: Cover 1 man or Cover 3 zone. The quarterback's pre-snap coverage read begins here.

A single high safety creates specific vulnerabilities. The middle of the field is defended by one player who can't be everywhere. Four verticals attacks his need to choose a side. Post routes attack his leverage. Seam routes attack the space beside him. Knowing the coverage is single-high before the snap tells the quarterback which concepts to attack and where the stress points are.

MOFC vs. MOFO (Middle of Field Open—two safeties split the deep field) is the foundational pre-snap read for every quarterback. It's the first question asked before processing anything else about the coverage.

## Example

"One safety in the middle before the snap—that's MOFC. Single-high coverage. The quarterback already knows this is Cover 1 or Cover 3 before the ball is snapped."

## Common Confusion

MOFC tells you the pre-snap look, not the post-snap coverage. Defenses disguise by showing MOFC and rotating to two-high, or showing MOFO and rotating to single-high. The pre-snap read is information; post-snap confirmation is what determines the actual coverage.
