## Definition

A mock draft is an analyst's or outlet's prediction of what every team will select when the actual draft occurs. It's not a big board—mocks factor in team need, positional value, trade rumors, combine results, and pro day visits on top of talent evaluation. The goal is to predict team behavior, not just rank players.

Mocks vary in methodology. A one-round mock covers 32 picks; a full seven-round mock projects all 257 selections. Some analysts publish their own player rankings alongside their mock; others use consensus boards. No mock is expected to be accurate in full—the value is in the reasoning behind each pick, which teaches readers how to think about team needs and draft strategy.

The volume of mock drafts increases sharply as the draft approaches. The final week before the draft produces dozens of updated mocks daily, incorporating last-minute reporting, visit news, and board movements. Mock drafts are both analysis and entertainment—the most-read draft content category by a significant margin.

## Common Confusion

Mock drafts and big boards measure different things. A big board ranks players by talent. A mock draft predicts who each team will pick. A team might select the 15th-ranked player on the big board at pick 6 because of scheme fit, positional need, or value at the position. The mock is about team decisions; the big board is about player quality.
