# Mirror Rush

## Short Definition

A flag football rush technique where the rusher shadows the quarterback's lateral movement from contain depth, using raised arms to obstruct throwing lanes.

## Definition

The mirror rush is a containment-first pass rush technique designed to eliminate the quarterback's ability to escape outside the pocket. Rather than attacking aggressively toward the quarterback, the mirror rusher maintains outside leverage at or near the rush line depth, mirroring the quarterback's lateral movement with raised arms to obstruct throwing lanes and prevent any edge scramble.

The technique works in combination with the push rusher. The push rusher attacks from the throwing-arm side, collapsing the inside pocket. The mirror rusher holds the weak-side perimeter. Together they create a closing corridor with no escape route—the quarterback must either throw quickly or absorb pressure from the push rush side.

The mirror rush exploits mobile quarterbacks' instinct to escape pressure by rolling to the weak side. Against a stationary rusher, a mobile quarterback can step up and escape to open space. Against a mirror rusher with proper leverage, that escape lane is closed before the quarterback reaches it. The mirror rusher's job is to never be beaten outside—every step the quarterback takes laterally, the mirror rusher takes a matching step to maintain outside leverage.

Footwork and arm position are the technical foundation. The mirror rusher must maintain breakdown stride—short, balanced steps that allow lateral direction changes—while keeping both arms raised to force high throws or deflect quick outlet passes. Overcommitting forward surrenders the leverage and turns a containment rusher into a non-factor.

## Example

"The mirror rusher kept her arms up and stayed patient—didn't chase the QB upfield, just maintained the contain lane. Forced a throwaway."

## Common Confusion

The mirror rush is not a passive assignment—it is an active containment technique that requires constant lateral movement and arm discipline. A mirror rusher who stops moving when the quarterback stops moving loses leverage and creates gaps for outside escapes. The technique is more physically demanding than a push rush because the rusher must react continuously to the quarterback's movement rather than committing to a single attack line.
