## Definition

The NFL minimum salary is the lowest amount any team may legally pay an NFL player under a standard contract, set annually by the CBA. The minimum is not flat—it scales with the number of accrued seasons a player has, increasing each year of service. A player entering his first NFL season earns a lower minimum than a player with six accrued seasons, who earns what is typically called the veteran minimum.

Minimum salary contracts are the most common deal type in the NFL by volume. Practice squad players, late-round draft picks, undrafted free agents, and veteran depth players often sign for minimum salary, particularly when a team has limited cap space. The minimum represents the floor of the market—any player on a 53-man roster earns at least this amount, regardless of role.

From a cap management perspective, minimum salary contracts are the most efficient roster-building tool available. A team with tight cap space builds depth by filling non-starter positions with minimum contracts, freeing cap room for premium players at premium positions. Teams in rebuild mode or cap-strapped situations often carry a significant portion of their roster at or near minimum.

The minimum salary also determines waiver priority costs. When a team claims a player off waivers, they assume that player's existing contract—if a minimum salary player is claimed, the assuming team pays the remaining minimum. This creates the waiver wire dynamic where teams with less cap space are disadvantaged when claiming higher-paid veterans.

"He signed for the minimum—first-year minimum, around $750K this season. Every player on the active 53 earns at least that amount regardless of role or snap count."

## Common Confusion

The minimum salary is not flat—it scales with accrued seasons. A first-year player earns less than a player with four accrued seasons, even though both are "minimum salary" players. Years of service determine the actual amount under the CBA's pay scale.
