# MIKE/RE-MIKE

## Definition

MIKE is the offensive line's pre-snap call identifying the linebacker who anchors their pass protection scheme. The center points to the Mike linebacker and declares him to the line—this single identification sets everyone's blocking assignment. The guards and tackles count out from the Mike: players inside the Mike get blocked by interior linemen, players outside get assigned to backs or are accounted for by the protection slide direction.

Re-Mike happens when the defense shifts or when the originally identified linebacker moves before the snap. The quarterback or center calls a new Mike—redirecting the entire protection scheme to account for the adjusted alignment. A missed Re-Mike against a twisting or shifting defense creates free rushers because blockers are still executing assignments based on the wrong identification.

The Mike identification is the most important pre-snap protection communication in football. Every lineman's assignment flows from it. A defense that disguises its linebacker alignments or stems after the Mike is called is attacking the protection at its foundation.

## Example

"Center points to the Mike linebacker—calls 50. Line sets the protection to the right. Defense shifts: the Mike moves outside. Quarterback calls Re-Mike, points to the new inside linebacker. Line resets. Snap. Protection is right because the Re-Mike caught the shift."

## Common Confusion

MIKE and Mike linebacker are two different things. Mike linebacker is the player—the primary inside linebacker. MIKE as a protection call is the offensive line's identification of the linebacker who sets the protection's point of departure. The two concepts share the name because the protection call almost always references the Mike linebacker, but the MIKE call is a protection tool, not a description of the defensive position.
