# MIKE

## Short Definition

The primary inside linebacker who sets the front and anchors the run fit—the defensive quarterback whose calls establish gap assignments for the entire defense.

## Definition

The Mike is the defensive quarterback—the player who communicates pre-snap assignments, calls the front, and anchors the run fit. Every other front player keys off the Mike's declaration: where the Mike sets the front determines gap assignments and run fits for the entire defense.

In most fronts, the Mike is the B-gap player to his side or the two-gap anchor in the middle. He takes on double-teams, makes the tackle after the line holds the point of attack, and is the first linebacker to communicate with the secondary on coverage calls.

Offensively, the Mike is the player every protection is built around. Offensive linemen "identify the Mike" to set the protection's point of departure. The Mike's alignment determines who the center slides to, who the guards block, and where the running back's pass-protection assignment begins.

## Example

"Mike is calling the front—he points to the 3-tech, calls over, the whole defense shifts. Every lineman now knows his gap, every linebacker knows his fill, the safeties confirm coverage off his call. Before the snap even happens, the entire defense has been organized by one player's declaration. That's what the Mike does."

## Common Confusion

The Mike is a positional designation, not a fixed player type. In different systems, the Mike can be a pure run stopper, a coverage linebacker, or a hybrid. What he always is: the communicator who sets the front and anchors the defense's interior.
