# Mesh

## Short Definition

A crossing route concept pairing two receivers running shallow drags toward each other across the formation, creating natural traffic against man coverage.

## Definition

Mesh sends two receivers on shallow crossing routes in opposite directions, timing their paths to cross in the middle of the field at 3 to 5 yards depth. The two routes run directly toward each other—the crossing action creates a natural pick zone that defenders in man coverage can't navigate cleanly.

The concept attacks man coverage at its core structural weakness: defenders following individual receivers into each other's space. When two defenders pursue their receivers through the crossing action, they either collide or have to slow to avoid contact, creating the separation the receivers need. Zone defenders face a different problem—the shallow depth puts both receivers in the void between the flat zones and the intermediate zones, where assignment boundaries blur.

The quarterback reads which side has the easier throw: he watches the crossing defenders and throws to the receiver who clears first. If the defenders don't collide or pick, he reads leverage—which receiver is more open based on his defender's position at the catch point.

In the Air Raid offense, Mesh is typically called "2" and is run with specific blocking and route complementing from the outside receivers to create maximum space at the crossing point. It's one of the five core concepts the Air Raid masters before adding anything else.

## Example

"Watch the two crossing defenders—they're trying to follow their men through the same space. They can't both do it cleanly. The receiver who clears first catches it in stride."

## Common Confusion

Mesh is confused with any crossing route concept. What makes Mesh specific is the intentional crossing of two receivers running toward each other in opposite directions at the same depth—the pick action is the point. A single crossing route is a dig or a drag; Mesh is the deliberate pairing of two routes to create traffic.
