Coverage assigning each defender to a specific receiver before the snap—the defender follows that receiver wherever he goes throughout the play.

## Definition

Man coverage assigns a specific defender to a specific receiver before the snap. At the snap, each defender follows his assigned receiver's route wherever it goes—regardless of what other routes do, where other receivers go, or how routes cross. The corner has #1. The nickel has the slot. The linebacker has the back. Those assignments hold for the entire play.

The coverage's strength is clarity. Each defender has one job and one target. There's no zone ambiguity, no reading multiple receivers, no decision about which receiver to take when two enter the same area. That clarity also enables blitzes: every receiver is accounted for before the snap, so an extra rusher can be sent without leaving a zone undefended.

Man coverage loses when receivers create separation—through route technique, speed mismatches, or natural picks that put defenders in traffic. A receiver who wins his individual matchup is open, with no zone underneath to provide a second line of defense.

The quality of man coverage is entirely dependent on the matchup. A defense with elite corners and athletic linebackers can blanket every receiver on the field. A defense that is mismatched at any position is exposing that matchup on every snap.

## Example

"Watch the nickel mirror every step the slot takes. Inside release, the nickel goes inside. Outside release, the nickel stays with him. No zone to help, no safety underneath. That's man coverage—it's one-on-one the whole route."

## Common Confusion

Man coverage and press coverage aren't the same thing. Press is a technique—a defender jamming the receiver at the line of scrimmage. Man coverage is a structure—every receiver has a specific defender assigned. You can play man coverage with off coverage (giving the receiver space at the line) or with press. They're different layers of the same decision.
