# Man-Beater

## Short Definition

A route or concept specifically designed to win against man-to-man coverage by creating separation through route technique, natural picks, or speed mismatches.

## Definition

Man-beaters are the answer to defenses that take away zone reads by playing man coverage. When the coverage removes the high-low reads and quarter-field zones that spread offenses rely on, the offense needs routes that can win in individual matchups—or combination routes that create traffic and separation regardless of how well the defender is playing.

Common man-beaters include crossing routes that use natural traffic between receivers, option routes where the receiver reads the coverage and breaks to open space, and out-and-up or stutter-go moves that exploit defenders who are running with receivers. The stack formation and bunch alignments are structural man-beaters—they force defenders into traffic before the routes ever develop.

The most fundamental man-beater is a clean release. Against press man coverage, the receiver has to get off the line without getting disrupted—inside release, outside release, or a swim move to defeat the jam. A clean release puts the defender in trail position and turns the route into a footrace.

When a team has a genuine speed mismatch—a fast receiver against a slow linebacker, or a big receiver against a small corner—the man-beater is a simple go route. No technique required.

## Example

"They went to man coverage and the offense went right to the crossing route combination—natural picks, natural traffic. The defenders couldn't follow their men without running into each other."

## Common Confusion

Man-beaters are confused with man coverage itself. Man coverage is the defensive concept. Man-beaters are the offensive answer to it. Not every route is a man-beater—some routes are explicitly designed to attack zone and struggle against tight man.
