# Long Snapper

## Definition

The long snapper delivers the ball between his legs on special teams plays—7 to 8 yards to the holder on field goals and extra points, 13 to 15 yards to the punter on punts. The snap must be fast, accurate, and consistent under any game condition. A bad snap that forces the holder to adjust or the punter to move breaks the entire timing of the play.

The position is more demanding than it appears. The long snapper snaps while looking backward between his legs, then immediately releases into his blocking assignment against an onrushing defender. The transition from snap to block requires both technical precision and athletic ability.

Long snappers are specialists—at the professional level, teams carry one whose sole purpose is the long snap. A bad snap on a field goal attempt can cost three points and a game. A bad snap on a punt can create a blocked kick or a return for a touchdown. The position's value is invisible when done well and catastrophic when done poorly.

## Example

"Snap on the field goal is perfect—7.5 yards, laces away, holder has it spotted before the coverage unit has moved a step. The kicker's timing is built around a snap exactly that fast. One bad snap forces a hesitation and the kick is blocked."

## Common Confusion

Long snapper and center are different roles. A regular center snap travels less than a yard and the center is the primary blocking anchor for the offense. A long snap travels 7 to 15 yards with precise accuracy—the mechanics are different, the distance is different, and most long snappers cannot double as offensive centers at the professional level.
