## Definition

Live betting—also called in-game or in-play betting—allows wagers to be placed on a game after it has started, with odds that update continuously based on the current score, time remaining, field position, and game situation. A bettor can wait until halftime to bet the second-half total, take a team on the moneyline after they fall behind in the first quarter at inflated odds, or bet a player prop based on how the game is unfolding.

Live betting has transformed the engagement model for football viewers. Rather than a single pregame decision, live betting creates a continuous stream of wagering opportunities throughout a game. Each possession, each score, each turnover shifts the market. Books use automated pricing algorithms to generate and update hundreds of live markets per game in near-real-time.

The fundamental live betting edge available to attentive viewers is information latency. Broadcast feeds are delayed several seconds. A bettor watching in person or with a faster data source can see a turnover before the betting algorithm registers it and place a bet before the market updates. Books mitigate this by using their own direct data feeds and by briefly suspending markets around scoring plays and turnovers.

Live betting generates a disproportionate share of sportsbook revenue relative to its bet volume, because the speed of the market and the emotional intensity of in-game wagering lead many bettors to make less disciplined decisions than they would pregame. The product is designed to keep bettors engaged throughout the game rather than walking away after placing a single bet.

"They went down 14–0 in the first quarter and the live moneyline jumped to +380. If you liked them before the game at –140, they're a much better bet now at nearly four-to-one. Same team, same game, very different price."

## Common Confusion

Live betting odds are not simply updated versions of pregame odds—they are real-time market prices recalculated by algorithms after every play. A team that was –3 pregame and scores first might be –9.5 live. The line reflects current game state, not the original probability. Live lines move faster and carry more juice than pregame markets because books price in the speed advantage they have over most bettors.
