# Live Ball

## Short Definition

The state of play from the moment of the snap until the official's whistle ends the down.

## Definition

The ball is live from the instant it leaves the center's hands on the snap until the official blows the whistle to signal the end of the play. During live ball, all rules are in effect—any flag pull ends the play at that spot, any penalty can be called, and any gain or loss of yardage counts.

The ball becomes dead—and the live ball period ends—when a flag is pulled, when the ball carrier steps out of bounds, when a forward pass hits the ground incomplete, or when the official sounds the whistle. Understanding when the ball is live vs. dead is fundamental to understanding nearly every other rule in the game.

## Example

"The snap bounces off the quarterback's hands and hits the turf—but it's still a live ball. Anyone can recover it until the official blows the whistle."

## Common Confusion

A snapped ball that hits the ground is live—not automatically dead. An incomplete forward pass is immediately dead when it touches the ground. These two situations look similar but follow different rules: a fumbled snap is live; an incomplete pass is dead.
