# Line Movement

## Short Definition

Any shift in a spread, total, or moneyline from open to kickoff—one of the key signals for tracking where sharp and public money is flowing before a game.

## Definition

Line movement refers to any change in a point spread, total, or moneyline odds between the time a line opens and when the game kicks off. Sportsbooks move lines to balance action—when too much money comes in on one side, they shift the number to make the other side more attractive and reduce their liability. A line that opens at –3 and moves to –5 has moved two points toward the favorite.

Line movement is one of the most watched signals in sports betting because it reveals how money is flowing. Sharp bettors—professional or sophisticated gamblers whose opinions sportsbooks respect—can trigger significant line movement with relatively small bets because books move numbers quickly to avoid being exploited. When a line moves early in the week with low betting volume, it often indicates sharp action. When a line moves late, high-volume public betting is the more likely cause.

Reverse line movement is particularly informative: when a line moves against the direction the betting public is wagering. If 70% of bets are on Team A but the line moves toward Team A's opponent, the book is responding to sharp money on the other side. Analysts tracking line movement alongside public betting percentages use this divergence to identify where professional opinion sits.

Steam moves—sudden, rapid line movement across multiple books simultaneously—signal coordinated sharp action and often cause cascading adjustments across the entire market within minutes. Books have risk management systems specifically to detect and respond to steam before their exposure grows.

## Example

"Opened at –3, now it's –5 and 80% of the public is still on the underdog. That's reverse line movement—sharp money on the favorite pushed it up despite the public going the other way."

## Common Confusion

Line movement does not always indicate sharp betting—it can also reflect public money, injury news, or weather updates. A line moving toward the public favorite is often the public pushing it. A line moving against public betting percentages is more likely sharp money. The direction of movement matters less than understanding why it moved.
