# LEVERAGE

## Short Definition

A run-defense principle where the defender keeps his outside arm free and maintains outside position to prevent the ball from bouncing past him.

## Definition

Leverage in run defense means keeping the outside arm free and maintaining outside body position on a blocker—preventing the blocker from reaching outside the defender's frame and sealing him inside. A defender who maintains leverage controls the edge; a defender who loses leverage gets sealed inside and the run turns the corner.

The principle governs every outside-facing defender in the run game. The defensive end, the edge linebacker, the force player—all of them are working to hold outside position against blocks that are trying to seal them inside. Outside arm free means the defender can always make the tackle on any ball carrier trying to go outside; inside arm free means the runner has already gotten past him.

Leverage is fundamental coaching language. When a coach says a player lost leverage, it means the blocker got outside his body and sealed him inside—the run bounced outside to open field because the defender couldn't hold his position.

## Example

"Tight end reaches the defensive end—gets outside his frame, seals him inside. The end lost leverage. Run bounces outside, nothing between the ball carrier and the second level. One missed leverage assignment turned a one-yard run into a twelve-yard gain."

## Common Confusion

Leverage in run defense is confused with leverage in coverage. Coverage leverage describes which side of a receiver the defender aligns—inside or outside. Run-defense leverage is specifically about keeping the outside arm free from a blocker's reach so the defender can force the ball carrier back inside. Two different concepts that share the same word.
