The receiver is forced to release outside, toward the boundary or away from the middle of the field, where the defender has the leverage advantage to carry the route. By locking the inside release, the Latch technique eliminates the slant, the inside stem, and the crossing route that begins with an inside release. The receiver has to fight to get inside, and the defender's inside position makes that fight costly. Outside releases are allowed—the coverage behind the Latch defender typically provides help on fade routes and verticals to the perimeter. Latch is used primarily on outside receivers when the defense wants to funnel routes away from the middle of the field. Paired with a buzzing safety or a rat-coverage safety, the inside denial pushes routes to areas where help already exists. ## Example "Corner is in Latch—inside leverage on the receiver. Receiver tries to stem inside for the slant. Corner maintains inside position, mirror-steps, won't give ground. Receiver has to break outside. Corner is already in position to carry it." ## Common Confusion Latch and press coverage are used interchangeably. Latch is a specific leverage technique within press coverage—the defender takes inside position and denies any inside release. Standard press doesn't specify leverage; Latch specifies inside position as the starting alignment and responsibility.
