# Last Man Rule

## Short Definition

A rule awarding the offense an automatic first down when the last defender contains the ball carrier without making a legal flag pull attempt.

## Definition

If the final defender between the ball carrier and the end zone uses body contact rather than a flag pull to stop the runner, the offense is rewarded with an automatic first down at minimum. In flagrant cases inside the end zone, officials may award a score.

This rule prevents the game from devolving into grab-and-tackle football in desperate situations.

## Example

"The corner had no help—she wrapped up the receiver instead of pulling the flag. Last man rule: automatic first at the 8."

## Common Confusion

Sometimes confused with a general holding penalty. The last man rule specifically applies when no other defender can reasonably make the play.
