# KILL

## Short Definition

A pre-snap alert canceling the huddle play and replacing it with a predetermined check—triggered when the original call is poorly suited to the defensive look.

## Definition

Kill is a live-game communication system that gives the quarterback the authority to change the play at the line of scrimmage. When the quarterback calls Kill, the entire offense recognizes that the original play is dead and a check play is coming. The check play is typically a simpler, safer option designed for the defensive look the quarterback is seeing.

Kill calls are part of two-play packages: a primary call in the huddle and a check built in for specific defensive looks. The quarterback reads the defense at the line, decides whether the original play has a chance, and Kill switches it.

The term appears frequently in installation language and practice scripts. "Kill, Kill" or "Kill-Kill-Kill" is the verbal signal that the play is changing.

## Example

"Quarterback reads the defense at the line—the blitz is coming and the called play has no answer. He yells Kill twice. The entire offense resets to the check play. Snap, protection shifts, ball gets out quickly. The Kill didn't change what the defense did. It changed what the offense was ready for."

## Common Confusion

Kill is sometimes confused with an audible. An audible is a full play change—the quarterback calls an entirely new play at the line. Kill signals a shift to a pre-determined check, not a free-form new play call.
