# Jam

## Short Definition

Physical disruption a defender initiates at the line of scrimmage to delay a receiver's release—legal within five yards, targeting timing and separation.

## Definition

A jam is the physical contact a defender initiates at the line of scrimmage to disrupt a receiver's release before the route develops. Within the legal contact window—within five yards of the line of scrimmage—the defender uses his hands to delay, redirect, or force the receiver off his intended release angle. The jam disrupts timing, creates hesitation, and can fundamentally alter which route the receiver can run cleanly.

Jam technique focuses on hands and timing. A defender who jams early and accurately can force a receiver into an outside release when the route requires an inside break, or add a half-second delay that throws off the quarterback's timing even if the receiver eventually gets free. The jam doesn't have to completely stop the receiver—making the route one step slower is enough to close the window for many throws.

Receivers counter jams with release techniques—rip moves, swim moves, arm-over, dip-and-go—designed to break contact before the jam can establish. A receiver who defeats the jam cleanly releases into his route at full speed with no timing disruption. A receiver who gets caught in a jam is fighting the block instead of running the route.

Jam technique is especially critical in flag football because contact rules differ from 11v11—defenders must understand which contact is legal at the line and which creates pass interference exposure.

## Example

"Corner in press—receiver tries to release inside. Corner gets both hands on him at the line, forces him outside. Receiver fights back to his original stem two yards late. The slant the quarterback expected at 1.8 seconds arrives at 2.4 seconds. The corner is already breaking on the throw. The jam didn't stop the route—it made it late."

## Common Confusion

Jam and press coverage aren't identical. Press coverage describes the defender's alignment—on the line of scrimmage, right on the receiver. A jam is the physical act of disrupting the receiver at the line by getting hands on him. A defender can align in press and bail without jamming. A jam is the contact execution within press coverage, not the alignment itself.
